Stumbled upon some old internship photos (close to 20 years ago now!) and it brought back a lot of perspective. Engineering has never been just about formulas, standards or drawings — it’s about applying them in real situations, under real constraints, with real consequences.
Some of the most valuable lessons, both personal and technical, came when I was put in the hot seat, out in the field, figuring things out alongside technicians, operators and supervisors who lived the plant or site every day. That experience followed me back into the office — it shaped how I design, how I assess risk, how I communicate, and how I make decisions. For young engineers: don’t be afraid to get out there.
Walk the platforms, join the shutdowns, observe the tests, talk to the people who run the facility, ask questions. The lessons you learn in the field will stay with you far longer than anything from a slide deck.
